Marty Meehan: Greedy, Short-sighted, and not the next MA Senator

There are lots of rumors that John Kerry is going to retire after his 2008 Presidential run, which opens up the Senate seat for the MA congressional delegation.  It's going to be a brutal primary, and the players are already putting together their warchests.

I don't have a favorite right now, but Marty Meehan, the sleazy Democrat, is making it quite easy to determine who shouldn't get the nomination. It's not that he won't relent and put some of his $5M kitty into the Democrats taking over the House.  It's that he doesn't even hesitate before lying to us about why he's keeping it.

Meehan balked at MoveOn's strategy, which is targeting 70 Democrats in safe seats throughout the nation with large campaign accounts. His money is staying put.

"I couldn't spend any more time raising money for the party," said Meehan, who's donated $125,000 in required "dues" to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee over the last two years and raised another $230,000 for gubernatorial and congressional candidates.

So he's already doing a lot of work, and that's why he can't part with any of his $5 million pot.  No wait.

Meehan questioned the ethics of the group's objective, saying "funneling" money from one political account to another lacks transparency.

However, that raises questions about everyday practices in the House, where every member of Congress is expected to transfer campaign funds, regularly amounting to $100,000 or more, to the DCCC during the two-year election cycle.

"The way to reform Congress isn't to be funneling money from one account to another," said Meehan, adding that supporters should donate directly to a candidate or a party committee.

Oh so it's an ethics problem now?  Whatever.  And then there's this.

Meehan laughed in an interview when asked if he takes the criticism personally. Then he answered no, saying he doesn't blame MoveOn for trying to raise money for Democrats, and adding that he's received more calls supporting him than asking him to unload his account.

I can't believe this guy.  He's telling us with a straight face that he's getting more calls to put his personal political gain above taking power from Republicans?  Um, ok, Marty.

I think Meehan's in trouble.  People have long memories for this kind of immoral cheapskate behavior, especially when the stakes are so high.

Pete Wilson, 69, of Lowell and a Meehan supporter, is angry at the congressman for not doing more to put Democrats in control of Congress, which he says is the quickest way to end the Iraq War.

Wilson's son, Benjamin, a 23-year-old Marine lance corporal, is serving in the war.

"Marty is keeping my son in Iraq by his refusal to support the DCCC," said an emotional Wilson. "He's not doing anything and my son is sleeping in the sand."

That's about right.  Congressman Meehan's office numbers are as follows:

978-251-3151
202-225-3411

Be polite.  After all, it's not nice to insult people whose dreams of becoming a Senator are crushed by their own pettiness and greed.

UPDATE: Apparently he's chipping in some cash. Good for Marty!

UPDATE, AGAIN: Never mind.

It's all about "Me!" with Meehan

Marty said "The best test of any politicians' credibility on term limits, is whether they are willing to put their careers where their mouths are and limit their own service."

And then he broke that term limits pledge in 2000.

Then his staffers edited Wikipedia to remove information about his broken term limits pledge.

So Marty, shouldn't you have kept your promise?

Or do you just not have any credibility at all?

Who do you see as Meehan's competion for Senate in '08?

Re: Marty Meehan: Greedy, Short-sighted,

Ed Markey was getting to run for Kerry's seat in 2004, so I can only assume he's competing for the seat in 2008.

Re: Marty Meehan: Greedy, Short-sighted, and not t

How is the rest (aside from Frank, who we've heard about) doing about this strategy? Markey? Tierney?

and who are the ones most likely to run for Senate in '08?

Markey for Senate

I dont know how Markey is doing on this question but I know that on a lot of other questions, he's been great, such as confronting global warming head-on in the best way possible--by raising fuel economy standards.  He and Meehan are considered the two most likely Mass Reps to run for Senate.

Barney Frank will almost certainly not run, because he is slated to become Ways and Means Chairman, a far more powerful position than freshman senator.

Re: Markey for Senate

Also, Frank will be 68 years old in 2008.

Re: It's all about "Me!" with Meehan

That isn't as big of a factor as him blatantly breaking that pledge.

And then trying to cover it up.

Marty Meehan: Greedy hoarder
Yes, please, please let's not forget this. I live in Mass. and most of the potential Senate seat contenders (excepting Frank who radiates principle everytime he does something newsworthy) are a blank slate.
Meehan has just left me with a first and very foul impression.

Re: Marty Meehan: Greedy hoarder

I moved into Somerville recently.  Do you know who my congressman is?  If they are on that list, I'll call them tomorrow.

Re: Ironic that Marty Meehan is doing this

Nobody seems to have yet pointed out the sheer irony that it's Marty Meehan (of all people) who's doing this.

Along with Chris Shays, he was the co-sponsor of the campaign finance legislation in the House (the counterpart to McCain-Feingold in the Senate) that eventually became BCRA -- the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002.

After scoring political points for sponsoring legislation that was meant to "get money out of politics," he's now sitting on a wad of cash that has no apparent reason but empire building for his own political career.

Pathetic.

If you want suggestions for who to back

I really like Michael Capuano.

I was initially torn between Capuano and Meehan, but obviously not anymore.

Barring the entry of a really cool darkhorse candidate like either former Rep. Joe Kennedy or State Sen. Jarrett Barrios, I think Capuano would be a fine choice.

Didn't Meehan have something really positive to do with Net Neutrality?

Scratch that, I was thinking of Shays-Meehan.

Carry on then.

Re: Marty Meehan: Greedy, Short-sighted, and not t

Yes, he and Chris Shays sued the FEC in federal court to force them to regulate the Internet.

Re: Marty Meehan: Greedy and Short sighted

Long time reader, this is my first time posting. I am a constituent of Marty Meehan and have voted for him twice.  Picked up a free Lowell Sun this morning, and there was an article about this.  The article mentioned a man whose son was in Iraq and was very upset about this.  I wrote him a harsh email this morning asking him what happened to his integrity.  I told him to do the right thing: not put his selfish political aspirations over the good of the country.  If he doesn't pony up the money, I won't vote for him again.

Re: If you want suggestions for who to back

I think he has designs on higher office. It was rumored for quite a while that Capuano would run for Governor in 2006. When he decided not to, a lot of people figured he had his eyes on the Senate, although it's very possible that he was just scared off by Reilly's early fundraising.

He doesn't have much seniority in the House compared to the rest of the delegation, so he doesn't have quite as much to lose, plus he's relatively young (he'll be 56 in 2008, older than Meehan, but quite a bit younger than Markey).

Short-sighted, and not the next MA Senator

Now why couldn't this discussion have started 9 days ago when I posted the original diary busting Meehan's balls? lol

http://mydd.com/story/2006/10/16/133222/ 64

Barney Frank is slated to become chairman of the Financial Services committee, not Ways and Means.

I'm thinking Deval Patrick is an attractive Senate replacement for Teddy, don't you?
