Our College Dems group just wrapped up our voter registration drive on Tuesday (voter reg deadline).  We registered about 5,000 people, which is 1000 more than we've ever registered in an off-year election.  We're all quite pleased (and exhausted) with our results.  The good thing is that these 5000 are almost exclusively students on campus, and they vote overwhelmingly for Dems.  The next step of course is making sure they all vote!

We should be lobbying the legislatures where we have majorities to make registering all eligible voters a mandatory function of the secretaries of state.  This will give them something to do other than suppress the vote.  Then the parties can concentrate on GOTV.

Registering for the draft is mandatory when you turn 18 (or at least it used to be).  Why isn't registering to vote?

the typical percentage of registered voters who actually vote in any given year?  Is it something like 80%+?  Or more like 50% and lower?

This is the key to success for the democratic party - the missing democratic millions.

So well done Matt for highlighting it and I hope we will see a lot more on voter registration in the next couple of years.

One on One efforts by people are the real key, the only way you'll ever make switches.

In our Colorado mountain county we are asking women volunteers to take the new (vintage 2006) WVWV flyers to the beauty shops, grocery stores, botox centers and all places women congregate to get the message out to women that their vote is important to our future. It's an easy action item for women in your communities. Voter reg has already ended here, but getting women to empower themselves with the vote is vital for this election and beyond.

The comment about the evangelical vote falling off in the 1920's got me to wondering about what would cause such a falloff. A brief bit of thinking and research quickly connected evangelicals to the Temperance movement, which was responsible for Prohibition(1920-1933). This attempt at social engineering was a huge failure, and resulted, among other things, in widespread corruption in  government. Sound familiar? My guess is that those who backed the movement were so disgusted and discouraged they eventually opted out of the political process. Fascinating stuff!
