Chris Matthews: Out of Whack

Peter Daou makes an essential point here:

"Bin Laden sounds like Clint Eastwood" -- "Bin Laden sounds like Ron Silver" -- "Bin Laden sounds like Rush Limbaugh" -- "Bin Laden sounds like Bill O'Reilly"-- "Bin Laden sounds like Mel Gibson" -- "Bin Laden sounds like Bruce Willis" -- "Bin Laden sounds like Michelle Malkin"... Imagine the outrage on the right and in the press (but I repeat myself) if a major media figure spat out those words. Well, on Hardball, Chris Matthews just blurted out that Bin Laden sounds like Michael Moore. Simple: Matthews should apologize. On the air. This has NOTHING to do with Michael Moore and everything to do with how far media figures can go slandering the left. And last I checked, Michael Moore didn't massacre thousands of innocent Americans.

It is outrageous that Chris Matthews can slander the left, and take the threat of terrorism so lightly.  And this after gay-bashing on Imus this morning.  Something happened to 'Power Bottom' Matthews, as he's completely morphed into a sniveling high school toadie to the homophobic right-wing jocks.

As Aravosis says, pathetic. I'd like to see a Democrat step up to the mike on this one.

Osama speech written in English then translated
An Arabic expert on the PBS Newshour program suggested tonight that this latest speech from Osama was written in English first and then translated into the Arabic. He said it did not contain the usual flowery or poetic style of Arabic that characterizes Osama's speeches. I find this curious. I also find it curious that this tape surfaced on the same day Cheney emerged from hiding to give a speech on the so called "War on Terrorism" before the neocon think tank Manhattan Institute. I note that the State of Union address is near and the administration needs something, anything to prop up this failing presidency. My name is not Oliver Stone but I am beginning to believe there are no coincidences when the stakes are so high.

Re: Osama speech
No fucking way!

You think this was faked?  I have been wondering all day why the "intelligence" community confirmed its authenticity so quickly.  That struck me as very strange, and not typical of this kind of forensic work.  I mean, who is declaring it authentic, and does everyone agree?

You remember that video tape of Bin Laden that US forces "found in a cave" in Afganistan?  It was dated to late October or early Nov of 2001, based on comments Bin Laden made.  No one in the US questioned that it was real, but the foreign press was suspicious.  When Bin Laden released an actual video a week later that showed what he looked like (he had lost like about 50 lbs) it was pretty clear that it was fake.  Again, this was reported in the international press, but not mentioned in the US.

Re: Osama speech
I do remember. This whole tape thing has been very suspicious for quite some time. And who trusts the CIA particularly now that it's under Bush-Cheney appointed Richard Goss. Any time there's heat on the administration there's always something like this to distract the hounds from the scent.

Matthews on Imus
The "joke," via Atrios...

MATTHEWS: Well, the wonderful Michael Savage, who's on 570 in DC, who shares a station with you at least, he calls it [laughter]--what's he call it?--he calls it Bare-back Mount-ing. That's his name for the movie.

Not only does he quote approvingly something that Michael Savage said, but he can tell you what station he listens to Savage on. Nice.

I used to think Matthews wasn't so bad. After all, he used to work for Jimmy Carter and Tip O'Neill. Now I think they should fire the stupid asshole.

Matthews really is no better than O'Reilly et al.
Unfortunately, Chris Matthews has had one of two things afflict him: either he's caught "Zell Miller" syndrome and is in need of genuine psychological treatment, or he's simply a man who will whore himself out to whatever side appears to hold better career promise.

Perhaps it's a mix of both.  The bottom line is that, just like CNN, it would appear Matthews is in competition with Fox News for an ever-smaller slice of the viewing pie.  Sooner or later, media execs are going to catch on that Olberman and Air America have a pretty good thing going, and realize that there's a much bigger audience to be had.  Until then, it seems to me that it's past time we treat Chris Matthews as a "hostile witness" and give him the full-on Sinclair treatment: go after his sponsors, and get him kicked off the air, if possible.

He's made himself part of the problem; there's absolutely no doubt whose side he's chosen.

Scarborough
just said the same thing  but added that Senators are also responsible.

Scarborough too!
I just saw CNBC's Joe Scarborough with airhead pollster Kellyanne Fitzpatrick go on and on about how "Democratic Senators" have been taking thier cues from Bin Laden or vice versa and both had been persecuting our Commander-in-Chief.  Anyway, so it goes...none of this should surprise anybody...is Osama actually being sheltered in enemy territory?  perhaps in the Kennedy compound on Cape Cod?  Basrbara Boxer's spare room in San Francisco?  Russ Feingold's couch in Madison?  Is that why the Commander can't find him??

The Video
I do not believe the video is for real. It is a doctored video and is part of the GOP strategy to change the headlines from Abramoff to terrorism to get the white women to stay in line...and the media including the CBS obliged. Next will come different threat levels..code orange, etc., and then a final doctored video in early November to sway the voters.

Re: Matthews and Bin Laden...
And what would your reaction have been should Matthews have said that bin Laden DID sound like Clint, or Rush, or Silver or Willis?  Would your reaction been the same?

Regardless of whether you like Michael Moore, he did not murder 3000 people.  Calling him an enemy of America and a murderer, which is what Matthews did, is about supressing political dissent through intimidation rather than proving it wrong through argument and discussion.  Surely you can agree, Nixon, that your arguments are strong, and should be used to persuade rather than shouting down your opponent or attempting to shut him up through overt bullying and accusations of treason.

It's cable political talk show
Chris Matthew is actually one of the good ones who don't try to intimidate his guests (like Bill O'Reily) and get some points across. Take it as half entertainment and half news. Don't get too serious about a phrase or two - Chris Matthew doesn't even hold public office.

John Kerry responds to Chris Matthews
Post from Crooks and Liars:

"You'd think the only focus tonight would be on destroying Osama Bin Laden, not comparing him to an American who opposes the war whether you like him or not. You want a real debate that America needs? Here goes: If the administration had done the job right in Tora Bora we might not be having discussions on Hardball about a new Bin Laden tape. How dare Scott McClellan tell America that this Administration puts terrorists out of business when had they put Osama Bin Laden out of business in Afghanistan when our troops wanted to, we wouldn't have to hear this barbarian's voice on tape. That's what we should be talking about in America." -- John Kerry

MAMOUN FANDY on PBS Newshour re Tape
MAMOUN FANDY: Right, but this particular tape is not terribly inspiring, just looking at the language of it. This is the first tape of bin Laden that has no single verse from the Koran. It does not have the flowery language of Arabic.

It seems to me that it is written in English first, and then translated into Arabic. It is very western style of tape. It is not very characteristic of bin Laden, at least it tells me that the non-Arabic speaking within the al-Qaida network are taking over the organization --

running for PA Lt. Gov
Chris Matthews brother, James Matthews (Montgomery County (Pa) County Commissioner) is running for Lt. Gov.

Someone needs to ask him if, like his brother, if he's a gay-hating, liberal basher.  Maybe if it hits close enough to home, we can get tweety to shut up.

Losing, always losing
Every time something like this happens, it seems more obvious to me that the right can't get over the fact that it can't win.

It can grab a presidency, strangle the media, pollute Congress on a grand scale, preen and primp on prime time, but it never feels it has won.  There's always some sensible, albeit frowsty lefty, voice out there (like chubby, messy, Michael Moore, like that professorial-looking Joe Wilson, like a black comer like Obama) making the right feel insecure and disrespected..

Republicans remain angry, fearful, and self-conscious. Insecurity makes them shout louder and get nastier.  They have money but they don't get no respect. They're not really winning, not winning the way they want to.  They rely on a cardboard imperial presidency.  They have to cheat to get and keep power -- and it haunts them.

I don't think the left has really caught onto this massive weakness on the right.  Reid, Kerry, Clinton -- they all look cowed.

Must be a slow news day
Every site is all in a twit about this.  I just don't care that much about Imus and Matthews.

Joke innapropriate.

Moore reference inconsequential.

Don't we have better things to focus on.

Re: Must be a slow news day
Actually, no. There are very few things more important to focus on than members of the traditional media basically accusing anyone who disagrees with Bush of siding with bin Laden.

Should we also focus on Medicare, GOP scandal, and winning elections? Hell yes! But we can walk and chew gum at the same time here.

Matthews
Chris is complicit in smearing and marginalizing anyone who deosn't buy the republican talking points.  The only time he is any good is when he is unprepared and hasn't read the days talking points.  It would be nice to have some balance air -at least someone to call him out when he makes such stupid remarks.  Can you imagine if  another host chimed in " but Osama's not as crazy as Pat Robertson" .  Then we would have some TV worth watching.  And they wonder why their ratings suck.
