Kilgore Steps into the Ball

This is from yesterday's debate between Kilgore and Kaine, by Tim Russert, who was priming for his gotcha moment, and got 'em:"But, Mr. Kilgore, it's a simple question," debate moderator Tim Russert said, demanding a yes or no answer to whether he would outlaw abortion except for cases of rape, incest or the mother's life.

Kilgore replied that the question was "a hypothetical. You don't know what any Supreme Court in the future is going to do."

"If the Virginia legislature passed a tax increase, would you veto it or sign it?" Russert persisted.

"I would veto it," Kilgore answered.

"That's a hypothetical question," the NBC "Meet The Press" host interjected, cutting Kilgore off as a crowd of about 500 business leaders and politicians - most of them sympathetic to Kaine - broke into laughter at Kilgore's expense.

Kilgore stepped right into it, what a clutz, the WaPost has it on video, if you'd like to see it too.

Money: Kilgore has about $6.7 million on hand; Kaine has $5.7 million; and Potts has $300,000.

Wildcard: The Democrats' Leslie Byrne is the only woman in any of the statewide contests, running for Lt. Governor against a Repubrobot, and she's a strong progressive voice. She's said that there were 740,284 women who voted in last year's national election but not in the 2001 statewide contests. I don't know if they are micro-targeting those beyond just the top-level or not (hope so), but a higher turnout from those numbers could be something that affects the Governor's race.

Little background, please?

I'm all for posts that make help shine light on the incompetence and perfidy of conservatives and Republicans, but I had to scan this three times to figure out who Kilgore et al were. A little bit of background, you know, like "In the Virginia Governor's race" would go a long way to making posts more meaningful.

VA Gov's race...

Yeah....but how often do politician's who get cornered in a debate suffer much politically. Clearly, KillyGore and Co., know they need to pull a fast one so VA women don't get scared (even though they don't excercise the same caution when feeding racial stereotypes). Well...hopefully if the debate gets a lot of visibility, it will influence enough voters to break for Kaine.

Kaine/Kilgore debate

Since this has been categorized as a national race & since my DD has written about it before, I can understand how Jerome didn't offer some background information on it -- but it is a good idea to provide that info for folks who haven't been following the story. I was lucky enough to be at the debate - & as a Kaine supporter I have to say it was a fabulous wild ride. As the Washington Post said today - Kilgore was trapped between the 2 Tims - & I agree with Larry Sabato -- Kaine did a great job. Russert did not back down when trying to pin down Kilgore & it was a refreshing sight to see! Kilgore took a page out of the Bush playbook & answered every question despite the topic with his rant on not raising taxes -- & his rant on how "As Governor I will be a good leader..." I was born in Virginia & have lived here my whole life & remember the disasters of Coleman, Allan, & Gilmore -- Gilmore won on getting rid of the car tax & guess what - we're still paying it. Kilgore is running on widening our I-66 inside the Beltway which is never going to happen either!! The wheels were definitely coming off Kilgore's wagon toward the end of the debate. He was sweating and stammering and reminded me of Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley -- Julie K

VA Gubernatorial Race (Election is Nov. 2005)

Jerry Kilgore (R) former state Att. General
v.
Tim Kaine (D) Lt. Governor
v.
Russ Potts (R-Ind.) state rep (or something like that)

Incumbent Gov. Mark Warner (D) is very popular, but term-limited. Kaine mentions Warner in every sentence.

Kilgore is a stooge but in a red state he's running even with Kaine. POtt is a blip, but could be a spoiler.

Kilgore's solution to all problems under the sun is to widen the major interstate that Northern VA commuters take into DC. That's his platform.

Kaine is running on results as part of the Warner-Kaine Administration that's had a lot of success in VA in hte last few years.

sort of know what's going on.

Alas, I've reached the point of
early onset dementia -- too much
sex, drugs, and R&B ?-- so that
sadly I confuse the two candidates
whose names start with "K".
Yes, it's pathetic.

All I'm asking is to get the basic
reminder I.D. the first time that
the name appears,
like,
Kaine, Dem.,
OR
Kaine, the Lt. Gov.,
OR
Kaine, our guy,
vs.
Kilgore, Rep,
OR
Kilgore, the wingnut,
OR
Kilgore, the bad guy.

After the players are clear,
I can usually follow the plot.

But thanks again for your
clean, clear wrap-up for readers
who may remain befogged.
