OH-02 Results Thread

Here it comes. Polls close in less than ten minutes. Feel free to start hyperventilating.

This is the best results page I have found so far:

WCOP real-time results

  • It's past 7:30. The die is cast. Come on!
  • All I can find so far is that Hackett is winning Brown County 52.95-46.61. Brown County link. Bush won Brown 63-36. This is what we need. A good start.
  • Schimdt leads 54.66-45.34. 3800 votes in. Hamilton Boe link.
  • These seem to be the absentee totals--still 0 precincts reporting. Enquirer link.
  • Jerome says"Yea, 45% in Hamilton is a good sign for Hackett, by my calculations (admittedly, back of the envelope), Schmidt could expect a 68-32 64-36 margin in the parts of Hamilton Country that are in the Ohio 2nd. So Hackett has a 9% swing. Once again, putting him right in the margin within 5%."
  • These are some messy results sites. It doesn't seem like anyone is reporting quickly.
  • Hackett pulling away in Brown County--1,480 (58.45) to 1,048 for Schimdt (41.39). Yesss!!!!
  • Schimdt strong early in Clermont County. Schimdt 1158-750 (60.60-39.25). 0 of 191 precints reporting there. Its all absentee. Clermont County link. Nooooo!!! Just when one lifts you up, the other lets you down. Could be a wild night.
  • From the three counties I can count some so far, its 4173 for Schimdt, 3859 Hackett. That's just under 52% for Schimdt. That might be all absentee. This could be very close.

  • 56 of 753 precints reporting. Hackett 51-49 Schimdt. Hackett 6562-6276 Schimdt. Here we go rock and roll. Yesss!!!! link
  • New results thread here.

Cool!!!
Right now, it's a tie!!! :-) Sorry...had to...

A genuine thanks for posting, and for everyone who made this race a race. Who knew elections in August could be so much fun???!!!???!!!

agreed
no matter what happens, i think as an entity "the netroots done good" this time.  i hope that our willingness to fight will embolden some of our democratic leaders, many of whom have been hesitant to break away from the culture of corruption that surrounds not only the GOP, but just about every politician in washington.

i'm pulling for hackettt because he is the anti-washington candidate. he embodies just about every quality i look for in a candidate: a willingness to stand up for what he believes in, a willingness to fight and fight hard, to not take any shit, etc etc.  i'm sure you can finish that list.

he's set a pretty high standard for folks who are looking to get netroots support, IMO.  regardless, i hope he wins.  if not, we will all live to fight another day.

Re: agreed
What I like best about what I've seen is that he doesn't SOUND like a politician. He sounds like a regular guy.

Just like Bush, except for a smart regular guy who knows we shouldn't invade countries that don't attack us.

And unlike Kerry, and Hillary and the myriad of others who talk in sound bites and measured, poll-tested phrases.

You're right -- win or lose, this is what I want to see in a Dem.

Keeping the Good Thought
I am just keeping the good thought going into this.  We have reached a point where there is no downside.

If Hackett wins, we win.  If Hackett loses, we convince him to tee it up against Mike DeWine, we win.

Ugh, Shiner Blonde is the worst beer I can imagine.

i love shiner blonde. maybe it's my location, but when it gets this hot i can't choke down a regular shiner.  and shiner light just... isn't shiner bock IMO.  so the blonde is a good light summer beer for me.  drinkin' one right now.

Re: pfffttt!
I live in Houston, Texas.  Shiner Bock is very very common down here.  In fact, every keg party I have ever thrown had at least one keg of the stuff.

I just don't like the taste of Shiner Blonde.  Neither do many people I served it to :)

But like Nietzsche said: "All of life is a dispute over taste and tasting."

Hmmm, thats strange, I feel a bit like a liberal intellectual elitist for quoting Nietzsche.

any news coverage?
the cable nets have gone all plane crash all the time.

it's a tragedy, but it looks like the flight attendants and pilots did a great job. so far no casualties reported. let's also hope that holds up, shall we?

i just scanned them all and got nothing regarding the race in ohio.  but i'm not checking FAUX, so if someone else can stomach it, let us know if they're covering it.

anything about it on air america tonight?

Brown County
Must be early voting. This CD, in the earlier leg study I did, consistently goes to the GOP by a 60-40 margin. So with early voting anyway, Hackett has a 13% swing.  If that holds up across the county, this will be down to the wire.
by Jerome Armstrong 2005-08-02 03:48PM | 0 recs
Brown County
If the results in Brown County are indicative so far thats a good sign. In 2004 Portman's challenger won 28% districtwide and 28% in Brown County. So if Brown County is representative of the district, despite its smaller population...then 53% ain't bad at all.

by annatopia 2005-08-02 03:56PM | 0 recs
Re: what's in clermont county?
The largest city in the country is Milford. Hackett was a city councilperson for the city in the mid 1990s. Schmidt lives in the county. Also the Hackett HQ in Batavia is in the county. I do not think on an national scale that anything or any person is known from the county.

Yea, 45% in Hamilton is a good sign for Hackett, by my calculations (admittedly, back of the envelope), Schmidt could expect a 58-32 margin in the parts of Hamilton Country that are in the Ohio 2nd. So Hackett has a 13% swing. Once again, putting him right in the margin.

Were gonna win one way or another
if Hackett wins this it will be a big slap in the face to the corrupt Ohio GOP and a sign that Dewine and Tafts days are numbered even if it is a single digit loss also if hackett loses with a like 0.1-10 point margin i think he will be in a good spot to take on Dewine or go for Taft's seat.

Hackett Wins In Brown?
I just checked the Brown County link and it shows Hackett winning with 58% of the vote and that 100% of the precints are counted.  Is this just the absentee ballots?
by MichiganDemocrat 2005-08-02 04:22PM | 0 recs
Re: Hackett Wins In Brown?
I don't think so.  The early versions of the report showed roughly 1.5% turnout, and were clearly labeled as absentee returns.  I'm guessing that the updated results, with roughly 8.7% turnout, probably include some non-absentee votes as well.  If other counties in-person voters improve by as much as Brown county did, Hackett may well have won this election.
by silence 2005-08-02 04:30PM | 0 recs
Re: Hackett Wins In Brown?
It's said 100% counted all night, since at least 7:30, even while the results have changed. I've heard turnout is supposed to be about 25% today. Already, there are 3,977 votes in, meaning almost 14%.

Here are the current numbers:

Hackett - 2,279 / 57.30%
Schmidt - 1,692 / 42.54%

Looking good...

Hackett Winning in Counties that went to Bush
According to the CNN 2004 web site, it showed that Bush won Brown County, and the results tonight show that Hackett won with 58% of the vote!!

Also, Hackett is doing much better in Clermont County than Kerry did in 2004.  We may be looking at an upset tonight if they don't steal this one from us!!

by MichiganDemocrat 2005-08-02 04:35PM | 0 recs
52% on absentee == good news for Hackett
What is expected turnout? 40,000-50,000 total votes? If that's the case, and poll voters trend towards Democrats because of Hackett's fantastic close in the polls, then this bodes very well for Hackett, right? He would need only 50.8% or so to win the election.

I am trying not to be too optimistic--those 20% wallopings in some counties will really snap you back in to reality in a hurry!

by niq 2005-08-02 04:35PM | 0 recs

Hamilton County, ? Reporting
DEM - PAUL HACKETT 4083 46.38%
REP - JEAN SCHMIDT 4720 53.62%

Hackett got 45.3% in the first batch of ballots, 47.3% or so in the second batch. I suspect precincts in the city will vary more wildly than suburban precincts.

Absentee results are...
...actually not bad, given that they traditionally break heavily Republican.   Also, I got the sense from the campaign reports that Schmidt didn't have much of a ground game, was pretty much just planning on cruising with a media campaign.  If so, Hackett's GOTV field ops might pull this through.  Oh please oh please oh please oh please.

On the ground?
Is no one here tied into the campaign there? Is someone blogging from the campaign itself?
Or is our only connection the overloaded and offline OH02.com?
I am just surprised we have no one over there talking to us.

Re: On the ground?
They are all getting rip-roaring drunk after having not slept for a week.

Or they have exits saying they'll lose, and don't want to have to grin and bear it.

Or both.

Nonetheless, 'twas a hell of a good fight either way.
