Omigod, I can't believe it!  What the hell was going on??

Re: Stabenow!!!!
WHY is she doing this?????   And WHY can't Democrats wrap themselves around more than one fight at a time?  It's absurd to think that party unity is not stressed on all vital issues.   What's in this for Stabenow? I can understand   Lieberman, of course, even Salazar and the  others.   And  it's to be expected that the  so-called moderate Repubs are wishy-washy and not dependable on most issues. This is a bill with [add-ons and blah blah], and without lots of fixin', should never have a yea vote.

Re: Stabenow!!!!
I was just looking at opensecrets.org to see who was lobbying for the bankruptcy bill.  It wasn't just the credit card companies and the banks -- it was also the big automakers, who wanted to change the way car payments are treated in bankruptcy proceedings (see article here).  That said, Carl Levin didn't vote for it, so go figure.
by Pragmatic Idealist 2005-03-08 03:01PM | 0 recs
Really only 31 democrats it looks like...
in the senate that is...

What I can't figure is why some of them didn't change their votes so that it barely passed 60/40... they must really love that GOP-lite and sticking it to those BK slackers... 80% of which found themselves in BK proceedings because we as a nation (as represented by teh votes of our congressional leaders) don't think its important for everyone to have healthcare coverage...

Now watch them roll over on SS... the bastards.

They love the money. . . pigs.

Damn right. . .
. . .We need to remember them.  This is revolting.

This is also International Women's Day.  Nice little kick in the stomach they just delivered to sick and elderly women (and women with sick kids).

So shall we see these gals on the streets or will our "leaders" be kind enough to re-open some debtor's prisons?   Nah,  we'll see them on the streets right where they belong.  Stupid old sick broads!!

Re: what a shame
Can't speak for Michigan but I live next to Wisconsin and have family there... Herb Kohl is a big time gazillionaire. Might as well be a republican...

Re: what a shame
thanks dryfly and yitbos for the clue.

what a shame.

Re: what a shame
Kohl is a DINO.  Pure and Simple... I imagine with all the charge cards his stores issue, this selfishly benefits him.

I have no Idea why Michigan did.

Well, that is how you control the masses.   Put them further in debt.

Kohl is related to Kohl's department store?
I see.

He used to be. He cashed out in 1979.

I understand Biden's vote on this
He is from MBNA state, after all.  They would punish him if he didn't go along.

But there's no reason for a senator from Wisconsin or Michigan to be voting for this.

by Geotpf 2005-03-08 11:47AM | 0 recs
Re: what a shame
To clarify.....

Sen. Stabenow did....Sen. Levin did not.

The only reason I can come up with is that Stabenow is up for re-election this year and the repugs will be coming after both her and Gov. Granholm....

But still!!!

I called her office and expressed my displeasure in her vote....I also told the wrker that I was planning on volunteering for her but am really concerned by this vote as it was out of the blue...

Someone please remind me...
...why Salazar was so much "better" than Mike Miles.

I can't imagine that Miles would've voted for this shit.

Re: Someone please remind me...
Because Citi & MBNA said he was better... aren't they charter members of the DLC?

Re: Someone please remind me...
miles would NOT have voted for this corporate welfare bill.
by annatopia 2005-03-08 12:11PM | 0 recs
Re: Someone please remind me...
He may not have but Pete Coors would have and if Miles had gotten the nod that would have been the result.
by Bothwell 2005-03-08 12:50PM | 0 recs
Re: Someone please remind me...
But if the dems don't support dem issues why not have Coors? Who cares if the toad has a D or R behind his name if he is still a toad?

Salazar will have a lot to prove and voting against this bill in final passage (and it will pass) won't count... that is a cop out... support it quietly through committee and on to the floor than vote differently in a meaningless final passage vote and grandstand.

Bastards.

Re: Someone please remind me...
I haven't studied Salazar in depth but I do seem to remember him criticizing bush's judicial renominations and he signed a letter to Bush opposing private accounts carved from Social Security. That's a far cry from a Senator Coors. And the Senate is better off for it.

I'm right behind you, believe me.  My fax will be off the desk momentarily.

I'm sick of these votes...
...where the Republicans keep thier entire party together, even Chafee, McCain, and the Maine twins, yet we have more than a dozen defections.  It's really starting to get annoying.
by Geotpf 2005-03-08 11:45AM | 0 recs
Re: I'm sick of these votes...
I think its easier for the Republicans to stick together since they get to choose what legislation comes to a vote and craft bills that will hold their caucus together and split the Dems. Its like Hastert's comment on only bringing up bills that can pass with a "majority of the majority." Dems don't have a choice in what comes before them on the floor.
by Bothwell 2005-03-08 12:52PM | 0 recs
Hmmm...good point
Never thought of it that way.  They can add something minor that makes thier wavering people (or ours) vote thier way.
by Geotpf 2005-03-08 02:29PM | 0 recs
Re: Hmmm...good point
Yeah its one of the concepts behind backing moderate to conservative democrats from Senate and House. Stephanie Herseth (D-SD) may have voted for the FMA which is a vote I completely oppose, but if she needs to vote that way to hold her seat and holding her seat brings Pelosi to the Speaker's chair then it could be worth it in the end, because under Pelosi the amendment wouldn't even come to a vote.

Re: I'm sick of these votes...
Chaffee and Snowe come up in 2006.  Chaffe is down 15 points in the polls for the general election but seems more concerned with getting past his Club for Growth primary opponent.  He's dead meat becoming deader all the time.  I wonder if he's been promised a job from Bush or his friends after he loses?  As for Snowe, everybody says she safe but I wonder?

Herb Kohl.
Every once and while he reveals a real dead zone in his brain where information about "the working stiff" should be stored. He tries hard, but there are times like these when there is a real disconnect. That's when Wisconsites like me throw up our hands and mutter under our breath something like, "What the hell was he thinking?"
by dicta 2005-03-08 11:49AM | 0 recs
Collins....
...is as owned by MBNA as Carper and Biden. They have call centers and back office operations in Portland, and all over the mid-coast. Half of Camden is painted MBNA green-and-gold.

Explaining the votes-and where was Nader in this?
First of all, the only moderate Repubs on the list are Chaffee, Snowe, Specter, and Collins, while McCain and Hagel are mavarick Republicans on issues they care about. This is a classic issue where the Repubs are united and the Dems who know that only us bloggers care will side with the Repubs. Remember that MBNA and credit card cos are based in Delaware and the Dakotas and that explains Carper, Biden, Johnson, and Conrad, and the others are mostly conservative. The problem is that we have been losing too many elections, so when we had 55 votes instead of 45, and there were genuine moderate and even liberal Republicans, the defections weren't really noticed. But now that we are down to 45, they hurt. By the way, where the hell is Ralph Nader-going around making speeches about how there is no difference between Bush and Gore and Bush and Kerry. If he had been actively alerting his supporters, Kohl and Stabenow and others would not have voted the way they did.

A Pox On These Democrats
When AND HOW are we going to make our elected representatives be true to their [promised] principles?  Does MBNA have such reach [and donations], that Dems lack the guts to vote honestly on an important issue?   And WHY did our Leadership come in so late[ and hardly at all] in asking for protest to the Draconian aspects of this Bill, and organizing real opposition?

Robert Byrd
I am not from West Virginia.  Does anyone understand why he voted the way he did?
by Abby 2005-03-08 01:20PM | 0 recs
Hagel is not a moderate!
Please do not even hint at this anywhere. He talks the talk but never walks the walk.

Oh, and I am so tired of Ben Nelson it hurts.

phat

Remember. . .
The vote today wasn't even an up and down vote on the bankruptcy bill.  It was a vote to decide if they could debate the issue (in terms of important  amendments) further.

If all the members can't/ won't even ask for discussion, where does that leave us?  They couldn't even hold it together enough to debate amendments put forth by members of their own party!!

Bill Nelson
I have never liked Bill Nelson. I didn't vote for him in 2000. I will not contribute money to his campaign in 2006 and I will vote for a third party candidate again if necessary. I don't care if I indirectly help elect a Republican. Such considerations are meaningless when you're up against the wall. If you're a Democrat and side against the people then I have no need for you. I'm not hopeful about taking Congress or the presidency back in 06/08. I think our efforts should be concentrated on the governorships and state legislatures, which will impact redistricting after the 2010 census. Only then will progressives be able to retake the Federal government.
by Gabriel 2005-03-08 03:35PM | 0 recs
Dear "friends"
It seems, you consider "the genuine Democrat" only very consistently liberal Democrats. Look - almost all Democratic Senators who voted for cloture represent either Republican-leaning or swing states. Exceptions: Biden, Carper, Lieberman - and all three ran as a moderates all their political life. They are mostly interested in political survival, and it's in their political interests to vote the way their vote. Even more - they can easily turn your anger to their profit: by creating a visible "distance" between them and you, which will be well received by most of the voters in their corresponding states. So you may curse them at your pleasure - that's also part of the plan. And my prdediction: after 2010-2012 you will say something like: "there are only 25 Democrats in Senate"....
by smmsmm 2005-03-09 12:03AM | 0 recs
I can't tell . . .
. . . are you suggesting that the Reep Bankruptcy Bill is founded on solid conservative principles, or just acknowledging that swing state Dems are at greater risk of being picked off if they don't play along with the Reeps' corporate-welfare agenda?

If it's the former, I'd love to hear your rationale.

by catastrophile 2005-03-09 12:19AM | 0 recs
Re: I can't tell . . .
No, mostly the second. Normal political expediency - that will probably help them to win reelection, and that's a first worry of any politician. Don't demand that people would do things that don't benefit their chances....
by smmsmm 2005-03-09 12:23AM | 0 recs
Political Expediency...
...is why Carper and Biden voted for it, because they are whores to the credit card companies-and they have to be, because they are from Deleware, where the streets are paved with, not gold, but plastic.  I understand this, and don't fault them too much for it (although Biden can't then in turn try to represent the entire country afterwards).  And Lieberman is, well, Lieberman.

My Letter To Stabenow
Dear Senator Stabenow:

I have cheerfully donated to your campaigns since you ran for state Senator lo these many years ago.  I have always thought of you as a champion for the ordinary American.

So why did you vote for cloture on the vile bankruptcy bill?  This is a vicious bill which will punish regular folks for having catastrophic illnesses which their health insurance doesn't adequately cover, for losing their jobs and being unable to find another... you get the picture. Contrary to the picture painted by the rapacious credit card companies, the majority of bankruptcies come from these, not from "irresponsibility". Interesting that the right-wing-hijacked Republican Party, the self-proclaimed "party of Godly moral values", backs up the credit card companines (and yes, auto companies) who practice what the Bible calls "usury".

The right-wingers (they aren't real Republicans) are determined to destroy the American middle class and turn us into a nation of serfs-- and you did your little part to help them. I am frankly shocked at you. I will be really thinking twice about donating to you this election.  If you have a (D) after your name but help the right wingers who go by (R), what good are you to us anyway?

No way in hell
Anyone can call Allen (R-VA) a "moderate."  He's as redneck as they come--complete with confederate flag--and is clearly conservative.
by KimPossible 2005-03-09 03:44AM | 0 recs
Good Point
Yes, KimPossible, Warner is much more of a moderate than Allen. His rating from ADA is 5%
