WV-Sen: Capito Will Not Challenge Byrd

This probably means that Byrd is completely safe now:West Virginia Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito says she's comfortable with her decision not to challenge U.S. Senator Robert Byrd next year. Capito says it's the "right decision for the citizens of West Virginia." She says for now it's best for her to run for reelection to her seat in the U.S. House. Good good good. Things are looking better and better in the Senate. Swing State Project reports that Capito already has a challenger for her House seat:On the flip side, Democrat Mike Callaghan - about whom we wrote earlier - will run against Capito in WV's second district. I'm not sure if this piece of news has been reported elsewhere yet, but I have this on good authority from Drew, the author of the original extensive profile of the district and of Mike. We might just be able to protect every single Democratic held seat in the Senate in 2006.

Things I'm still nervous about
I'm hopeful you're right, Chris, but what's going on in Minnesota? Maryland? Those are the only places I'm worried about holding, now that Hoeven said he wouldn't run in ND, and Harris is looking hopeless against Nelson in FL. Also, how's Byrd's health? Isn't he really old? I'm worried that he'll die soon, or retire. Is there any chance of that?

The Dems have had a decade long drought in Minnesota at most state-wide offices (Wellstone wasn't exactly the DFL's pick when he ran in '90, and Dayton bought the seat after several other attempts to buy offices). Sure, we have decent candidates, but neither hits it out of the park.  And we make a mistake if we misunderestimate Steele.

Another good thing about this is that not only is WV out of play, but its one more state we dont have to put resources into. With the scope of the GOP's pickup aims continuing to shrink, Democrats have less seats to defend, and therefore more money to spend in each race. On the other hand, Republicans will have to put up a real fight in a good 6 or 7 states- maybe one more if Trent Lott retires.

Pulling Money Out of WV- Bad Idea
Not so fast there!

Wouldn't it be nice to get rid of Arch Moore's daughter in the WV 2d Cong. Dist?  Good?  It would be great!

So after talking about what a great guy Mike Callahan is (and he IS a great guy), let's not start smoking the tires to abandon him.

Shelley Moore-Capito is VERY soft.  She came quite close last election to losing to a political newcomer, a fine fellow by the name of Eric Wells.  Considering the fact that Moore is the #2 recipient of Bugspray DeLay's filthy lucre (http://www.ourfuture.org/action_center/delaypac_byamount.cfm), it would seem wise to give Mike all the support he can stand to get rid of that awful Bush toady and DeLay lickspittle.

Let's keep our eyes on the prize: the House AND the Senate in '06 so we can roust out the White House hooligans by any legal means, including impeachment.

I grew up in what is now her district...
Redistricting changed it a little since I grew up there, but let me tell you that she is the only Republican to represent either one of the two districts that were combined to create it in over 20 years.

We have to compete here or we won't compete anywhere.

Go after her on DeLay hard. BTW, went after him hard today on EWM:
