Fitzmas Watch

Raw Story says:Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has asked the grand jury investigating the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson to indict Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and Bush's Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, lawyers close to the investigation tell RAW STORY.

Fitzgerald has also asked the jury to indict Libby on a second charge: knowingly outing a covert operative, the lawyers said. They said the prosecutor believes that Libby violated a 1982 law that made it illegal to unmask an undercover CIA agent.

Richard Sale says:An hour ago I was contacted by a U.S. government official close to the Fitzgerald case. This person told me that there WILL be indictments announced later this afternoon, and the Special Prosecutor will hold a press conference tomorrow.Richard Sale also says::The probe is far from being at an end. According to this reporter's sources, Fitzgerald approached the judge in charge of the case and asked that a new grand jury be empaneled. The old grand jury, which has been sitting for two years, will expire on October 28.

Thanks to a letter of February, 2004 which Fitzgerald asked for and obtained expaneed authority, the Special Prosecutor is now in possession of an Italian parliament nvestigationi into the forged Niger documents alleging Iraq's interest in purchasing Niger uranium, sources said.

They said that Fitzgerald is looking into such individuals as former CIA agent, Duane Claridge, military consultant to the Iraqi National Congress, Gen. Wayne Downing, another military consultant for INC, and Francis Brooke, head of INC's Washingfton office in an effort to determine if they played any role in the forgeriese or their dissiemination. Also iIncluded in this group is long-time neoconservative Michael Ledeen, these federal sources said.

I guess we shall see soon enough.

UPDATE (Scott): The AP is reporting that the grand jury has adjourned for the day with no action taken on indictments. Looks like we have to keep waiting...

Wow Chris this is intense
Now I know why you're a political junkie. For me, I guess, its sort of like sports here.

But honestly chris, in the end, I'd really much rather prefer the boring version of all of this. The one that just shows things working..

My heart really goes out to all the people in Florida under Gov. Bush that are going to be out of power for a month.. and the folks who Katrina hit .. FEMA is sending water trucks down there but no coordinated effort on where to pick them up.

I guess anything is better than what we've got but in the end, I hope we've at least got some path to just boring old government too...

I'm sitting on pins and needles!!

correction
The AP article said that it adjourned without announcing any action.  It did not say it took no action.

Re: correction
Well, obviously they took some sort of action today, even if it was only talking over lunch. But it's my understanding that you couldn't really issue an indictment without announcing it. Can anyone clarify this?

Re: correction
yes, they can be issued under seal. the public need only be informed of the date that they were delivered at some specific future time. In this case, that time must be before friday, because that is the date that the panel will expire.

IF there is anything, the mostly likely date that it will be made public is tomorrow. If on the other hand, everyone is innocent then there will be no Fitzmas..

Does anyone think this is a distinct possibility?

Re: correction
NO FITZMAS?!?!?!

All day on MSNBC, Tweety kept saying that he was hearing the grand jury could be extended.

Too bad...
It will be a great blow to the GOP, but at most these guys spend a few months to a few years in jail before Bush pardons them.  Too bad there is nothing that can be done to keep it from happening.

Re: Too bad...
I heard that wilson and his wife are planning to file a civil suit against cheney, rove, libby and anyone else who had anything to do with this.
That could keep this rolling for years -- and none of it would be secret.

The Republican Spin
Nailing Libby on the "outing" is what this investigation was all about. But I'm already hearing the neocons stating that the obstuction and perjury charges are only because the prosecutor couldn't get any "real" evidence. If perjury and obstuction of justice aren't crimes, than why are they in the law books? And if this is the way it plays out, I certainly hope the Dems open up their mouths and keep this on the "front page" for months to come.
