Open Thread

Like millions of others, I will be travelling and spending time with my family for the rest of the day, so here is an open thread. VP speculation is the order of the weekend, as will be commentary on our nation and "patriotism." Also, here is a link to every TV ad ever used in an American Presidential campaign. Which ad is the best ever? Which is the worst of all-time?

Enjoy your day.

Re: Open Thread
Sen. John Edwards is the favorite among many Democrats to become Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's vice presidential running mate. But he might not be the favorite of Kerry.
The question with Edwards is whether Kerry's ego will let him choose someone who's so much more politically talented. Many other Democrats have already done so, telling The New York Times on condition of anonymity that they have spoken to Kerry about picking Edwards. But Kerry apparently is resisting.

"They are different generations and different backgrounds and different styles," one anonymous source told the Times. "Their chemistry at the outset would not have automatically been comfortable. And during the primaries, Kerry clearly felt that Edwards was something of an upstart. It was like, `Where is he coming from? Why is he on the same stage with me?'"

As John Kerry raced back to Washington recently for "meetings," some reporters excitedly learned that Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack was also in the nation's capital - and being cagey about his schedule.

A vice presidential interview? Obviously!

And sure enough, hours later, Kerry did hold such a meeting - with Dick Gephardt.

Ugh, who knows, but it sure seems that Kerry has settled to choosing between Edwards (whom everyone wants) and Gephardt, who Kerry likes the best.

We'll have to hold onto the earlier news that Sam Meyers, who ran Edwards's advance team in the primaries, "is moving over to Camp Kerry to run advance for the VP."

Sam Meyers knows the business well, he'll be a great asset for any campaign.

The worst ad might be one of Stevenson's
The singing lady adoring Adlai...yikes.

After perusing the ads, I would say negative ads are brutally effective.

In particular LBJ in 64, Nixon in 68 and 72, and Bush Senior in 1988 all ran very powerful and effective negative ads.
