Ginny Schrader for Congress, PA-8

Democrats have just caught a remarkable break. James Greenwood, the Republican congressman from PA-8 (Bucks county, northern Philadelphia suburbs) has decided not run for re-election. This leaves Virginia "Ginny" Schrader with an excellent chance to win in this slightly lean-Dem district. In 2000, it went for Gore 50.7-46.9-2.4. This is exactly the sort of luck that Democrats need to pounce on in order to take back the House sooner, rather than in 2012.

I have never asked you to do this before, but today I am asking. Donate to Ginny Schrader today. Thus far, she has only raised $13,191, but that is going to change. Add $.02 to your donation so they know it came from MyDD.

If you need to check out Scharder's issue page first, be my guest. I do not think you will be disappointed. I am going to take a strong personal interest in this race. Go Ginny!

Update(Jerome): I chipped in $50 and my 2 cents toward Ginny. The philly burb has more on the story. Come on everyone, she's in the race to stay, she's the kind of progressive we want to elect, and all she's lacking is the funds to win this race. It's a Democratic district, Gore/Nader got 54% in the new redistricted 8th. Hit it.

Me too.
Already donated some coin, and I will be interested to see how much money she has raised today since this story is getting wide exposure over promiment Democratic blogs.

Perhaps we can raise enough money to 1) scare off any serious Republican challengers and 2) encourage the DCCC to help out.

All right
I'm a little tired of giving money--I'm at around the $3,000 mark for various candidates, bloggers and causes, but this is obviously a special opportunity.

My 50.02 will go in very soon.

Thank you, Jerome & Chris. Around 100 days to go.

I'm tired, I shouldn'a have said that
Is that a lot of money?  I don't know.

Was most of it "earned" through pure luck from a quirck in the labor market?  Yes.

I'm not rich--not even remotely close.  I just got in the habit of paying for Democracy, is all.  I spend a lot more on food.

It's sad
that we have been reduced to having to pay for our Democracy, but the other side has been paying for decades to subvert it with increasing success.

I wish I had $3,000 to give, and perhaps someday I will. I'm at $650 and will probably push it to $1,000, which to me is mind boggling. But desperate times call for desperate measures. And it's amazing how people are responding to the call. Despite the fact we could use every dime we can get, my wife hasn't even complained about our political donations. That, more than anything, is a sign of how desperate things have become.

How much is "a lot"?
Many of the folks I've spoken with have never given politically before, and have no sense of what's "a lot".

It varies a great deal based on one's financial situation, of course, but the point is that with so many new donors, there's an opportunity to set expectations and benchmarks.

One talking point I've been trying out with some success is "You pay 20%-35% of your income in taxes.  Isn't it worth an extra 1% to decide who gets to spend it?"

I'm not sure if 1% is the right number here -- for some people it may be, for others it may be totally unrealistic.  What do y'all think?

Re: Give through ActBlue to track
My two cents worth.

I went to ActBlue, tried to figure out
how or where to give at that site.
Clicked on House races, then PA,
got the ActBlue entry for the 8th district,
used the link to the candidate's website
and gave there.

Confirmation No.:    118---
Contribution To:    Schrader for Congress
Contribution Date:    7/19/2004
Amount:    $30.02

I'd already given $20.01 at the urging
of the DailyKos. Gave this little bit more
in tribute to MyDD.

Keep up the good work.

Re: Names
Yea, I expect the GOP to intrafight over this one. On the Dem side, those two can forget about it, it's done.
