Changes At MyDD

The 2004 election, or at least the pre-election analysis of 2004, is over. As such, it is time that, as a site, we move on in order to stay relevant. The President, House, Senate and Governor's pages have become antiquated, and we need new content.

As such, coming soon to the Menu Box will be five new special pages, replacing our existing four. Combined, I believe they will go a long way toward addressing our post-election needs:

  • Activism. This page will contain descriptions and links to various forms of growing online activism that we can become involved with. The first two links on this page will be the reader suggested Creation of National Community Newspapers Association, that will work to expand independent media across the country, and BlogPac, where the liberal, netroots street fight will be waged at a higher level than ever before. Let me know what else you think deserves attention.

  • MyDD book club. I suggested this idea late last night, and it seems to have sparked a lot of interest. So, we are going to go ahead with this project as well. Our first "book" will be Phillip Agre's long essay What Is Conservatism and What is Wrong With It, and our first discussion will start on Wednesday, November 18th, at 10 pm Eastern. From that point, we will have a discussion of an actual book every other Wednesday night, starting at 10 pm Eastern. You can vote now on nominations for the December 2nd discussion, which will be of an actual book. After every discussion, I will compile the nominations for the next book and put it to a front-page vote. The Book Club page will archive all previous discussions, as well as provide information about the upcoming book and links for people to purchase the upcoming book and books we have already discussed.

  • Vote Defense.I asked the community, and the community has spoken. People want more attention to the voting troubles associated with this election than we are giving. So, soon there will be an entire page on MyDD where each of the specific allegations, as well as new allegations, can be discussed. I will monitor the discussion, and post summaries of current investigations. The page will also provide links to other sites doing the same thing. Of course, someone is going to have to present me a summary of what is going on in order for me to do this effectively.

  • Balance of Power. This page will serve as a reference site for the current balance of power within the federal government and all state governments. It will include the partisan index chart, state-by-state maps of party control over US Senate and Governorships, the new database I am building on the 2002 and 2004 House elections, and a list, with links, of party control of ever branch of every state legislature in all fifty states. Basically, it will be a complete overview of which party controls what. We need this information to help us know where to attack next.

  • Elections 2005 In December, there are important House run-offs in Louisiana. In less than one year, there will be a number of state legislature, mayoral and Governor's elections. Between now and then, there will probably be some special elections. This page will serve as a reference point for all elections that will take place over the next twelve months.
Our fight continues, and MyDD will change to help support our fight as best as possible. No good blog rests on its laurels. Together, our community will seize the future.

What else would you like to see?

Great Job
I love the new ideas! Keep up the good work, perhaps an expanded blogroll?

I like small ones
Don't you think Atrios's blog roll is out of control? I like small, tight blogrolls. Maybe its just me.

Re: I like small ones
Yes I agree that Atrios's blogroll is too big but I also believe that there is room for expansion. Its your blogroll and its your decision. Just offering my opinon

Roll Call of 2006 Senate races
Devastated by the 2004 losses, I cannot wait to be devastated in 2006. I would like to see a list of all Senate candidates up for reelection in 2006 so I can start building my hopes up now.

Thanks, and keep up the great work.

Re: Roll Call of 2006 Senate races
Maria Cantwell (D-WA) is up in 2006 and has already started her campaign website.

This is one we will have to defend vigorously

2006
I agree with John Gor0-   I'd like to see a picture of the political landscape for 2006, so as to start thinking about how we can recover some of what we lost this year.

I also wonder if we ought to be thinking about local initiatives.  Are there some actions that could be taken at the very local level that might serve as a counterweight to the bad shit we know is coming down from Washington?  It looks to me like we are in for a ironic reversal of the situation that has been in place for the past 50 years, wherein conservatives were always grumbling about a federal government that was too assertive.  Now that they pretty much own it, I'm sure they are not going to be shy about wielding the power of the national government.

Re: 2006
I'm getting off subject here, but we could take a page from Rove's own book.

In 2006, every swing state should have a resolution on its ballot concerning the draft. Maybe a resolution on immediately ending Social Security. A resolution about forcing all citizens to become Methodist.

Rather Vote Irregularities- call it
Defense of the Vote or Freedom to Vote or Voter Reforms. I think the real concerns should be transparency, and making certain we have a system legitimate in fact rather than by legitimate by speculation from either side of the divide.

Election Protection
That's what the Election Protection Coalition calls it. How can you not go with a feminine rhyme like that?

Seriously, though. I think this is a branding issue, and plenty of people are already calling it the new civil rights struggle. It has promise of being a real winning issue for us, not least because voter suppression is so key to maintaining conservative power.  The sooner we can all start using the same language, the sooner we get everyone else using it. So, I vote for "Election Protection."

Re: Election Protection
Say aloud Defense of the Vote- hell, yeahhh! v. Election protection-hell, yeah!- which one seems more visceral? forget the feminine- politics is a contact sport. our goals should be feminine- to protect and nuture, but our language must be about toughness b/c people look for strength in leadership (look at Margaret Thatcher for how this works). Anyway just my two cents of word choice

Re: Election Protection
"Defense" is macho???  Don't think so. It's inherently reactive. Protection, not so much. It's more pro-active. PRO-tection. Get it?

Feminine <> wimpy.  Just ask any moma lion.

Feminine Rhyme
I almost forgot. A feminine rhyme is a two-syllable rhyme. Nothing to do with the meaning or connation of the words. They do a much a better job of staying in people's heads than masculine, one-syllable ryhmes. In the midst of verse, this makes you slow down, whether you realize it or not, which in turn makes you more receptive.

Really Glad To See Such Thinking
I'm really happy to see you shake things up. One problem at DKos--which I also dearly love--is that it seems to be somewhat a prisoner of its own considerable inertia.

I'm not sure what I'd suggest right off--other than the comment I made about using the term "election protection"--I just wanted to weigh in with a note of appreciation for this sort of thoughtfulness. We need a whole lot more of it when it comes to continually refining the institutions we create.

Regarding state stuff...
Chris, can I be any help to you in this department? My time is a little limited right now, but I have taken an interest in getting discussions rolling on state-to-state election issues.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to do to help out. I think you still have my e-mail.

thanks --
especially for the activism part!  I'd love to see updates on legislation, state or federal, so we'll know when to start being a squeaky wheel (just like the reactionary right is so effective)--e.g, time to start writing to legislators in the 10 states currently considering statutorily protecting pharmacists who refuse to fill birth control prescriptions.  And a way to track our progress would be great, too.  Finally, am interested in whether anyone else is starting up any state intiatives/lobbying legislatures to ensure that future elections have a verified paper trail.

And I'm definitely free to help with any of the logistics for this!

Voting reform
Keep the focus on the need to eliminate private companies running our elections and counting our votes. We do not want private companies to run our elections! It certainly is not what the Framers intended and the possible conflict of interest is simply enormous.  Thanks.

Re: Voting reform
Exactly, and the emphasis has to be on integrity and openness in vote counting and in government generally. We have to keep our focus on integrous vote counting or it won't matter who runs or what the issues are.  This issue ought to be right out there.  If the Dems can get on it and run with it, great.  They sure dropped the ball in 2000 and with the subsequent voting legistation.  If they can't get with it, then this great grassroots movement toward transparency in government will have to bring forth its own candidates.  Let that be the platform.

One thing
I would like to see, is a site that compiles house and senate bills that will be up for vote, and contact inks to Congress.  That way, we can at least make our voice heard.

About the Book Club
I think the idea is great, but one book per week is a lot for people like me (two small kids, a job, wife finishing PhD, a long car commute).

How about an article (preferably freely available) every other week, or even 2 out of 3 weeks? And try to announce the selections 3-4 weeks in advance.

I'm going to try to participate as much as I can anyway. Also, we should try to keep the conversation going for at least a week so us slower thinkers can think of something to say ;-) This would be a good use the blog format, I think.

Re: About the Book Club
OK, I'm an illiterate. The post says every other Wednesday. Maybe we should discuss the ABC song first (blush)?

Just substitute "time" for "week" in my post above.

what about 08
Long term strategy for the next election is what most of the postings are about and I'd like to see a spot dedicated specifically to that kind of big picture.  We always seem to get lost in the trees.

Re: what about 08
I agree. I'm sure Rove is already looking at '08.

And since we're never going to get ahead of the Repubs by emulating their strategies (I certainly don't mean their policies), our thinking about '08 needs to leapfrog whatever they have in mind - we can't win in '08 by trying to refight '04.

2006, resources
I would like to have a resource bank for candidates in '05 and '06.  I know a lot of people in PA who are alredy intent on working to defeat Santorum.

It would be nice to have a list of links and texts on candidates positions, votes so that we can distribute information quickly to people in the GOTV eforts and to write LTEs.

Seconded. In my case, it's congresscritter Pombo.

Judiciary
I like all these ideas.  In the "Balance of Power," will you include elected state judges?  In Alabama we just lost 3 more seats on the state Supreme Court and need to start working on taking some of these positions back.  Control of the state courts is important and most people know very little about those races.

fundraising for organizations
I'd like to see a push for continued donations to the great grassroots organizations that developed in the run up to this last election.  We've got a bit before there's new candidates, so I'd like to see the same level of fundraising push for NDN, ACT, moveon, etc. as we did for the great candidates that were advocated by MyDD.

Continued high fundraising will keep these orgs healthy, provide them the ability to mobilize against Bush appointees and initiatives, give a voice to show Democrats in Congress that we want a vocal opposition party, and provide a nice news narrative about the unity and activism of the left (with the handy "fundraising by the net" bit that they like to report).

Primary Filings? - No uncontested districts
I agree with those who said that no district should go uncontested.

Is there a resource for filing deadlines and a list of who and how many filed for Congressional District races? State house & senate seats?

If I knew that a Republican was running unopposed in my district, hell, I'd try to get the signatures and file myself just to force the Repugs to spend the money. (big talker)

The Forest
I'd like to see some section devoted to "what it means to be a democrat". What, exactly, is the philosophy of the party? How is that philosophy translated into action? Does registering as a Democrat mean that you're a progressive? Is the Democratic party simply a retail outlet?

There's a great little story about two Atlantic City "Salt Water" Taffy manufacturers who have been feuding for over a hundred years. Both companies have their loyal customers. Both count on people who would never think to buy the other's product. Well, it turns out, that for the last twenty years or so, BOTH companies are owned by the same man.

I think we need to take a long, hard took at the party and what this party believes. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. I mean, I think I know, then everything gets turned on its head -- like the vote for the tax cuts when Bush first came into office.

Should we hold those people we elect as Democrats to some sort of Party principles? I think we need to ask ourselves these questions and a whole lot more.
